چکیده

Measurement and modeling of the inf luence function plays a vital role in assessing the performance of the continuous MEMS deformable mirror (DM) for adaptive optics applications. The influence function is represented in terms of Zernike polynomials and shown that the dominant modes for representation of central actuators of the DM are different from those for the edge actuators. In this paper, a novel and effective method of modeling the influence function for all the DM actuators is proposed using the 2D sinc-squared function.

3. Calibration of the Inner Pyramidal Mirror

Unlike rigid parts, deformable parts can be deformed by contact forces during assembly. For successful assembly of deformable parts, information about their deformation as well as possible misalignments between the holes and their respective mating parts are essential. However, because of the nonlinear and complex relationship between parts deformation and reaction forces, it is difficult to ac...

Development of a 4096 Element MEMS Continuous Membrane Deformable Mirror for High Contrast Astronomical Imaging

Presented in this paper is the development of a 4096 element continuous membrane deformable mirror under development for the Gemini Planet Imaging instrument designed for extra solar planet detection. This deformable mirror will enable the next generation of adaptive optics (“Extreme” AO) capable of achieving contrasts of up to 10, required to detect these planets that are obscured by the brigh...

Image-based calibration of a deformable mirror in wide-field microscopy.

Optical aberrations limit resolution in biological tissues, and their influence is particularly large for promising techniques such as light-sheet microscopy. In principle, image quality might be improved by adaptive optics (AO), in which aberrations are corrected by using a deformable mirror (DM). To implement AO in microscopy, one requires a method to measure wavefront aberrations, but the mo...

Aberration-free dynamic focusing with a multichannel micromachined membrane deformable mirror.

We demonstrate aberration-free dynamic focusing with a low-cost 19-channel continuous-surface micromachined membrane deformable mirror (MMDM). A lookup table of the optimum control voltages for various focal lengths is obtained with an adaptive optics algorithm. Diffraction-limited imaging resolution is achieved owing to the capability of the MMDM for aberration compensation. The measured speed...

A Lorentz Force Actuated Continuous Deformable Polymer Mirror for Wavefront Control

This paper describes MEMS deformable polymer mirror system for adaptive optics application. This system employs a 4 μm thick SU-8 membrane with a stress balanced double side aluminum coating as a mirror element. Underlying Lorentz actuators are used to control the surface topography of the mirror, enabling optical wavefront correction. Compared to electrostatic, piezoelectric, and thermal actua...
